How Often Should I Water My Outdoor Plants?
There isn’t an exact answer to this question as there are too many variables. Wind, rain, temperature, and pot size can all determine how often and how much to water. The best way to determine if your plants need to be watered is by touch. Insert your finger into the soil, if it is dry it will need water.
A good indication that you are giving an adequate amount of water is to make sure that the soil is moist and the pot drains. It’s best to let your pot dry out a bit in between waterings. If your plants are too dry, the water may run directly out the bottom and not absorb into the soil, so water slowly for complete absorption. Keep in mind pot size, the smaller the pot, the more often you should be watering. Never water in the heat of the day, early morning or evening is always best.
How Often Do I Fertilize My Pots?
For annual plants in containers, it is best to use both granular and liquid soluble fertilizer in a regulated feeding schedule. When planting, use a granular fertilizer. As the plant matures, incorporate liquid fertilizer into your watering schedule, approximately once a week. Keep in mind some plants are more vigorous than others and will require feeding more often. Always follow manufacturer’s instructions on the packaging.
